Lafayette Republican mayor Joey Durel hopes President-elect Barack Obama “messes up some things”

January 16, 2009

Republican U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany has some gracious words about President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration in a story in today’s Daily Advertiser:

“I think it’s important to recognize that this is a historic event,” Boustany said, referring to the inauguration of the first black president. “The country is excited about the inauguration, and I think it’s a good thing. We need to do everything we can to fight the cynicism about politics.”

Unfortunately, Republican Lafayette mayor Joey Durel doesn’t appear to share that bipartisanship tone. Durel has this to say about President-elect Obama:

“I hope he is successful in some things and messes up in others,” Durel said.

Obama hasn’t even taken office yet, and Durel’s hoping that Obama “messes up.” Mr. Durel, what happened to the McCain/Palin campaign slogan, “Country First”?
